Major Weekend in College Football Includes Seven Hornung Award Matchups

LOUISVILLE, KY (Sept. 9, 2010) – The second week of the 2010 college football season

features seven games involving matchups between individuals on the watch list for the 2010

Paul Hornung Award, including the first ever conference games between watch list candidates.

Thursday’s game between Demond Washington (Auburn) and Leon Berry (Mississippi State)

will be the first on the calendar.

 

For the second consecutive week, Randall Cobb, Derrick Locke and Bobby Rainey are

featured in matchups involving players on the watch list.

 

• Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010: Demond Washington (Auburn) vs. Leon Berry (Mississippi

State) at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: Greg Reid (Florida State) vs. Ryan Broyles (Oklahoma) at 3:30

p.m. ET on ABC

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: Graig Cooper (Miami) vs. DeVier Posey and Terrelle Pryor

(Ohio State) at 3:40 p.m. ET on ESPN

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: Mohamed Sanu (Rutgers) vs. T.Y. Hilton (Florida

International) at 8:00 p.m. ET

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: LaVon Brazil (Ohio) vs. Eric Page (Toledo) at 7:00 p.m. ET

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: Brandon Boykin (Georgia) vs. Stephon Gilmore (South

Carolina) at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN2

• Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010: Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke (Kentucky) vs. Bobby Rainey

(Western Kentucky) at 7:30 p.m. on CSS

 

Johnson/Harris Showdown Produces Big Results: This past Sunday’s meeting between Tulsa

and East Carolina was one of six games during the season’s opening week that featured multiple

Hornung Award watch list candidates. East Carolina’s Dwayne Harris and Tulsa’s Demaris

Johnson’s were a big part of their teams efforts on the field, combining for a total of 473 all-

purpose yards and three touchdowns in a 51-49 win for East Carolina. Both players showed their

versatility in the outing by recording multiple carries, receptions, kick returns and punt returns in

the game.

 

Big Wins in Week One: With 48 of the 49 players on the Watch List in action in the

opening week of the college football season, players compiled a 38-10 (.792) record. Of

the 10 losses, six came at the hands of another Hornung Award Watch List player’s team.

 

Paul Hornung Award

Created by the Louisville Sports Commission, the Paul Hornung Award is designed to recognize

versatile, high-level performers in major college football and help preserve the legacy of one

of Kentucky’s best known athletes. A panel of experts will select the inaugural winner in early

January 2011. The votes will be tabulated by Dean Dorton Allen Ford. Hornung is considered

by many the best all-around player in the history of college and pro football. He won the 1956

Heisman Trophy at quarterback for Notre Dame and was the No. 1 pick in the 1957 NFL draft.

He played every position in the backfield during his career with the Irish, where he also punted,

kicked, returned kicks and played defensive back and was a multi-threat offensive back and

prolific kicker in the pros. He was a member of four NFL championship teams as an all-pro

halfback for the Green Bay Packers and led the NFL in scoring 1959-60-61, set the single season

scoring record in 1960 with 176 points and was named League MVP following the 1961 season.

Legendary Packers Coach Vince Lombardi called Hornung, “The most versatile man ever to play

the game.” Paul is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame and the Kentucky

Sports Hall of Fame and resides in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. More information go
