SJSU’s Jones Added to Weekly Honor Roll
Louisville, Ky. (Wednesday, October 19, 2011) – San Jose State sophomore Chandler Jones has been recognized by the Paul Hornung Award for his versatile performance as a member of this week’s Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll.
The Paul Hornung Award, presented by Texas Roadhouse, is awarded annually to the most versatile player in major college football.
Jones, a Los Angeles native, was the only player in FBS to score a touchdown three different ways last week. His three scores were key in San Jose State’s 28-27 win over Hawaii on Friday, Oct. 14. Paul Hornung’s knack for scoring made Jones’ addition to the Weekly Honor Roll an easy choice.
Jones scored twice in the second quarter on a 20-yard run and a 23-yard fumble recovery for touchdown off a Hawaii kickoff.
His third score in the game was the most important though as it was a game-winning touchdown reception with just 36 seconds left in the game.
“That was actually amazing,” said Jones. “When I caught the ball and saw an opening, I first thought to work my way out of bounds. But I made a move, made a guy miss and ran to the endzone. When I got into the endzone it was a relief.”
Entering this weekend’s game with Hawaii, Jones had not posted a play longer than 16 yards this season. Each of his scoring plays eclipsed that mark this weekend.

Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse
Created by the Louisville Sports Commission in 2010, the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football. The Award is designed to promote college football and help preserve the legacy of one of Kentucky's best-known and accomplished athletes who has always called Louisville home. Hornung, the 1956 Heisman Trophy winner at Notre Dame and NFL MVP for the Green Bay Packers, set a single season NFL scoring record that stood 46 years. Paul is a member of the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame, and Vince Lombardi once called Hornung, “The most versatile man ever to play the game.” A national selection committee comprised of 16 sports journalists and former NFL stars votes for the Hornung Award, and this year fan voting on Facebook powered by Texas Roadhouse will comprise the 17th vote. All votes are tabulated independently by regional accounting firm Dean Dorton Allen Ford. The winner is honored at a banquet presented by Jewish Hospital Sports Medicine in late January each year in downtown Louisville.
